My Siren Weapons and thoughts on the weapons

So I have been playing the heck out of this game since its release and have decided to take a break and make a post about some things that I have noticed about the weapons.

I was kind of under the misconception that legendary weapons were just that, Legendary.

However, being that my Siren has her SMG skill at 50 I decided to max the other skills and sought the best weapons I could find in each category.  This had me do some comparison looting.

(And BTW at skill 50 of Eridian you get +48% damage +102% Cooldown and +153% Accuracy which for the "pistol" versions can be quite nice, although the cannons and snipers burn through the energy too quickly to be of any real use)

So for this post I will use two legendary revolvers that I have that are alost identical, which are why I started this train of thought.

They are both "Pestilent Defiler"s.

These pistols made me realize that legendaries like all the other guns are merely randomly generated and not always all that great.  From what I have seen (and these numbers are pulled out of my ass for reference sake) if you have a weapon then green would be 5% better, blue 15% better, purple 25% better and orange something like 40% better.  Still usually better than it's lower level brethren, but not always if the weapon base is crappy and the random additives to the weapon suck then that weapon is going to tempt you with its color and leave you wanting.

So the 2 pistols...

They are (one I use, both I keep because they are friggin sweet - one just more so being randomly generated):

AX21 Pestilent Defiler          DL320 Pestilent Defiler

Damage 426                          Damage 336

Accuracy 91.7                         Accuracy 91.7

Fire Rate 1.9                           Fire Rate 1.0

Give Sick

High Elemental chance

Has a scope (although no multiplier)

and is x4 Corrosion (and it corrodes 90% of the time I'd say)

I wish I hadn't vendored some of the crappy legendaries I have found (most level 48s), so Ic ould better explain what I mean with some wrokign examples.

But here are some of the nice ones I've kept

SV5 Malevolent Savior (Level 48 SMG)

Damage 139  Accuracy 90.2  Fire Rate 14.6

Hallelujah

+18 Ammo Regeneration

+37% Reload Speed

+27% Damage

DEF21 Hunter's Defender (Level 48 Shotgun)

Damage 127x7  Accuracy 68.2  Fire Rate 1.0

I can do this all day...

+18 Ammo Regeneration

+38% Reload Speed

+41% Accuracy

EQ11 Blast Equalizer (Level 48 Revolver)

Damage 250  Accuracy 88.8  Fire Rate 1.6 Explosion x2

Unending Firepower

+50% Reload Speed

+18 Ammo Regeneration

RF BRD Firehawk (Level 48 Repeater - I love this gun..it is like my Hellfire and always catches them on fire)

Damage 192  Accuracy 91.7  Fire Rate 2.8 Fire x4

Bring the HEAT!

Now an example of a crappy Legendary

SG10 Blast Hammer (Level 48 Shotgun)

Damage 138x7  Accuracy 23.0  Fire Rate 1.8  Explosion x2

Drop the Hammer!

3.0 Weapon Zoom

+31% Fire Rate

Now not to say a Blast Hammer can't be good, but with the stats generated on this drop it just isn't really all that legendary

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BTW saved my two favorite drops for last (for those that made it through this long post) One is a class mod (it is the only one that I have seen with the last effect  and I have seen tons) and the other is my gun of choice (it is only level 34 but I still use it and am praying and farming for a level 48 version of it).

The class mod is for when I am farming (ie can resupply ammo easily - my merc mod adds +23 ammo regen for SMGs which I switch in when I am low)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Catalyst Class Mod (Level 40)

+22% Team Cooldown Reduction

+4 Girl Power Skill

+3 Intuition Skill

+2 Team Find Rare Items (I know, I know, droooool - lol I love this mod)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TD22 Combustion Hellfire (Level 34 SMG)

Damage 79  Accuracy 78.7  Fire Rate 8.3  Fire x4 (it always lights them on fire - 100% chance)

We don't need no water...

Other than the pestilent defiler's no weapon that I have found drops baddasses and bosses like this weapon.

And that concludes today's lecture.  come back next week for my new series on "Why Dr' Pepper, cookies and salty potato chips are all you really need in your diet: for the active gamer"

Well obviously because they

Well obviously because they have the potential to be better and are seen less often.  But what does that have to do with anything?

Did you even read the post because I mentioned that I use Legendaries.

Tyyl, Shadaisy2312 hit it

Tyyl, Shadaisy2312 hit it right on the head.

The comparison of Legendaries isn't with other Legendaries.  You said it yourself- if randomly generated, it's only natural some of them are going to get sucky stats.  There will thus be OMG 133+ Legendaries... and crappy, weaksauce ones.

These crappy oranges should be compared with guns of lesser rarity.  Certainly, at the same level requirement they shouldn't be only as strong or effective as a yellow or purple.  Even the weakest crap Legendary should still outclass guns of lesser rarity- if they did, then the system would definitely be broken.

Also: the term "Legendary" is misleading.  That's why it's disappointing.

Borderlands' rarity system was taken from World of Wacraft.  In WoW, oranges are iconic, canon storyline-based, almost one-of-a-kind, insanely hard to get items.  They are or were wielded by major characters in that game's story.  As an example, the staff of one of that game's greatest mages had to be assembled from 40 rare drops from the game's then top raids.  That's a lot of hours of labor and chance just to get that legendary.

Borderlands uses the same term but don't apply the same extreme requirements to get such weapons.  By borrowing the system, Gearbox used an inappropriate term for Borderlands' top items.

My opinion

The way i see it, the greater the rarity of the item, the higher the base stats. Everything after that is random generated. I suppose that the orange and other higher types have more chance of greater random stats and effects, but it is also possible to receive a green item that is just as effective. Granted, considerably less likely to occur, but still a slim possibility. I believe there is another post in the gun forum about the effectiveness of white and green weapons. So basically the higher the rarity, the greater possibilty of higher stats. This is my take on it, and i may be completly of track. Hopefully there is a small shred of truth in this convuluted mess of a post.

Hey Tyyl, what system are you

Hey Tyyl, what system are you playing it on? I just found a level 48 Combustion Hellfire, but i play on PS3, so if you play on PS3, your in luck. I also have been playing a Siren, and i lover her to death. I played the first time through as a soldier, and he was ok, but the Siren literally rapes when you pair her with a good elemental gun for the right enemies. Right now Im set up for speed runs through Crimson fastness, so im using 4 different corrode weapons.

I know what you mean about the legendaries, most all of them i have gotten suck compared to purples i have of the same gun and same level. I Use to never use greens, but now im finding that with the siren, a green machine gun or smg with a x2 elemental does way more damage than than a purple of the same gun with 2 times the damge points. So im with you, i would much rather find a good elemental gun than a crappy "legendary" any day.

Also, i found one of those mods with the "+2 find rare items" on it on my first playthrough with a soldier. It wasn't the only reason i decided to play a siren next, but it sure was the bump i needed to make the choice. I also got a level 45 one of those recently, and those are the only mods i have ever equipped.

So if you, or anyone with level 48 elemental guns want to trade for some level 48 legendaries, hit me up on PSN, tag "Roadsurfer"!

Maybe I wasn't being clear.

Maybe I wasn't being clear.  I wasn't complaining about legendaries at all.   I love almost every aspect of this game.

To give you an idea.  I have been sick since the game came out and have spent my time (about 12-14 hours a day) in bed playing it.  I was merely stating that it isn't always the case, that legendaries are the best.  I guess an obvious statement to anyone that has played a bit.

My only complaints would be that money doesn't show past 9999999 (even though it is calculated) and that added bonuses aren't listed on the character sheet (ie +4 girl power doesn't show up on the tree with what the total bonus is now at).

Very cool discussion here.

Very cool discussion here. I've seen a lot of people showing off their guns but not much analysis into how the system is really working.

From playing throught the

From playing throught the game with two people through two playthroughs, i really did learn that the different characters do play differently. With both my characters, the soldier and siren, i speced them to rely on their action skills, maxing them out to what i thought would be most effective. Withthe soldier, its easy to run out into the middle of a firefight, lay waste until your shield depletes, throw down the turret and take cover, and see where your at when the dust settles. I used some elemental guns with him, but unless it was a x3, it just didn't seem like it was effective enough of a tradeoff in power to use an underpowered gun with elemental effects.

The siren however plays totally differently, as long as you max her out in the spark skill as soon as possible. With the spark skill, and for added effect some class bonuses to elemental effect and damage, those elementals become so much more deadly. even a x1 TMP can take out most any badass (except for bruisers, psychos, and shielded guys) in one 20 round clip. I also have her phasewalk skill maxed, so i run out guns spraying, wait till shield depletes, phase blast, and run for cover (not always necessary, because with high level shields they recharge while phase walking). I do however notice myself now paying a lot more attention to greens, as i have found some devastating x4 maliwan guns that are green! And for rocket launchers, sometimes x4's are white! I understand that its the combination of parts that go into the gun which determines its stats and rareity, but in the later game, and especially with the siren, sometimes the whole is much more than just the sum of it's parts. Just my two cents!

You know after your post and

You know after your post and adding me to your friends list Roadsurfer, I logged in and got two Hellfires (one in the vending machine and the other a drop) and it got me thinking again.

With Legendary weapons it is a matter of finding a Legendary "base weapon" that I think fits my play style, like the Hellfire, and then keep hunting for those until the other stats line up with something worth using.  A Legendary isn't always all that great, but if the base type is good then eventually one will drop with the other stats that make it great.

And as to the Siren specs..I am Controller/Assassin now and I am having no problems with anything in the game.  The only time I come close to dying is when I go crazy and just run head long into a pack and they start getting lucky shots in or one of them suprises me with a blast from a static gun (I hate those things).

 My spec is:

                                       Phasewalk 1/1

Diva 5/5                                                                          Slayer 5/5

Inner Glow 5/5                                                               Enforcer 5/5

Hard to Get 5/5 / Girl Power 5/5                                  High velocity 5/5 / Blackout 5/5

Mind Games 5/5

And it seems to work well...I used to be Controller/Elemental, but like this setup more.
